Characteristic features of the Gothic style in the interior

The Latin word “Gothic” was used by architects to emphasize the grandeur of the buildings. Gothic style, originated in the XII century in France, in just one century covered almost all of Western and Central Europe, and only in the XIV century, it began to be used in Eastern Europe.

The main feature of this direction is that it is difficult to reproduce it in small rooms. Gothic is a style that requires space and high flows, so it will look best in country houses and apartments with a good layout.

This is interesting! The Gothic style was formed more than one century. It intertwined cultural features and traditions of many countries, so the interiors created according to the canons of this direction can be strikingly different from each other.

Gothic style, as a medieval direction, involves the use of rough materials for finishing. Basically, it is wood and stone that have undergone minimal processing. They should definitely be used in order to achieve the necessary interior styling. Alternatively, you can use modern finishing materials that accurately reproduce the texture and appearance of natural stone and wood.

Various frescoes and wall paintings that profusely decorated medieval houses also became a characteristic feature of the direction. We understand that it is problematic to recreate such artistic elements in a modern apartment, so we will give you a tip: pay attention to the images in the graffiti technique. Talented artists will be able to skillfully paint the walls in your home in accordance with the specified theme.

For Gothic, it is common to use metal as finishing elements for various items. This material is found everywhere: it is used to make fittings, forged window grilles, furniture, lamps, and decorative items. Gothic style is impossible to imagine without stained glass Windows. Large windows are a great “canvas” for creating unusual pictures of colored glass.

Interior architecture and design of the Gothic style

The architectural feature of the Gothic style is the large Lancet Windows. The appearance of window openings was borrowed by medieval architects from Eastern architecture, where the form of a pointed arch was popular. However, such Windows require the use of a special type of overlap due to the fact that the main load is not on the entire wall, but only on individual support structures. This led to the appearance of another characteristic element in Gothic architecture – the cross-pointed arch. This ceiling, for all its grandeur, looks very elegant due to the fact that it is supported by neat thin beams.

As in the case of the antique style, the Gothic style is characterized by the design of rooms with columns, colonnades, and arches. In the Middle ages, they served not only as decorations but also as an exquisite way of zoning space. As for the decoration of walls and ceilings, the Gothic uses various bas-reliefs, moldings, as well as special elements inherent only in this direction – “fish bones” – protruding from the walls of the beams that rest on the ceiling.

Undoubtedly, this kind of architectural feature requires a huge area, but in order to embody the interior of the apartment Gothic style is enough to do affordable things, such as false columns, polyurethane or plaster stucco, and neat pine beams, tinted with suitable varnish or paint.

The fireplace serves as the focal point in most Gothic-style interiors. The portal is decorated with traditional patterns, which are often based on plant motifs and images of mythical animals. It is not necessary to design a fireplace with figures of gargoyles and unicorns, it is enough to correctly style it and fit it into the existing design.

Color scheme and finishing features in the Gothic style

Interior design in the Gothic style assumes a rich color scheme and dense colors. The choice of color palette depends on the desired result. If you need to get a dramatic and somewhat mystical effect, use dark colors as the main colors, such as brown, black, anthracite, deep purple, Burgundy, and dark green.

However, this color scheme is best suited for styling interiors in public places, because together with the characteristic Gothic elements, it actually turns out to be a theatrical setting. In the apartment, this design will quickly get bored and the mysterious Gothic will turn into a depressing design. For everyday life, it is better to choose a neutral palette of shades that will become the background for accents of rich color.

Finishing in the Gothic style is very strict. The surface of the walls is either plastered or made of stone or wooden panels. The maximum that can be allowed is tapestries. Zoning of the room with the help of finishing is welcome: in different zones, the walls are made of different materials. Choosing options for the design of a conventional flat ceiling, choose a coffered ceiling or a ceiling with beams.

As for the floor covering, here you can dream up, because the restriction will only be the budget laid down for repairs. The best option is dark wood floors or ceramic tiles. But if you do not have enough luxury, you can buy a floor covering made of natural stone.

Gothic interior design

No matter how Grand and fundamental the interior design in the Gothic style looks, it must remain harmonious. Decoration, furniture, and accessories should form a single ensemble.

Gothic tends to be man-made products, so the interior is dominated by things created by skilled craftsmen.

If this is furniture, it looks very solid and solid. It is made of natural wood and decorated with carvings that should echo the General design. Characteristic features of products made in the Gothic style-elegant carved legs, high backs of chairs and massive headboards, impressive tables, and cabinets.

To decorate the walls in the Gothic interior, tapestries with specific historical images and paintings stylized as the Middle Ages are used. Very often, metal or wood carvings are used to decorate, for example, wooden doors or vaults. Beautiful decoration of the ceiling will be a coffered structure.

Also in the Gothic style will look great frescoes and stucco, wall tapestries with heraldic themes. As a decoration in the Gothic style, most often used: Large, massive mirrors in wooden or metal frames. Antique weapons on the wall, wrought-iron candlesticks. Bronze or gilded cups, plates, vases with carved patterns. Unusual sculptures made of wood or metal, lamps in the form of torches on the walls. Paintings with historical themes-images of knights or jousting. Colorful textiles that make massive, heavy draperies. Gothic style in the interior is a unique combination of luxury and mysticism, which is sure to appeal to all fans of originality and creativity.

Lamps also play an important role in the interior of the Gothic style. The modern industry offers a huge selection of models that can be used to create a genuine atmosphere of a medieval castle. The lighting itself should be chamber and a little mysterious.

Gothic style in its original form is considered quite difficult to reproduce in a city apartment, so it requires adaptation to modern trends. Try to replace saturated colors with similar shades, but calmer tones, use stained glass Windows as decor for doors and lamps, “soften” the cold stone floor with a fluffy carpet with a thick pile.

Gothic-style is very rich and complex, and this is its main advantage. In the right hands, it will find a new life, reveal its full potential and become the personification of a strong, deep and memorable design.
